There are over 50 rare plant species found in the area, 10 of which are found nowhere else on earth. This fragile landscape is protected by the Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Wilderness Park.
The amazing and spectacular Athabasca Sand Dunes are only an eighteen mile boat ride away from Lake Athabasca Lodge. The Athabasca Sand Dunes consist of a series of dune fields stretching for about 100 kilometres along the south shore of Lake Athabasca in northwest Saskatchewan. Some of the dunes are an amazing 100 feet high. This is the largest active sand surface in Canada and one of the most northerly set of major dune fields in the world. Constantly moving, they slowly smother forest in some areas and uncover stands of previously covered forest in others.
Saskatchewan has nine historic parks and eight historic sites which are associated with provincially significant historic events. They tell stories from relatively recent historic happenings to the prehistoric. These parks and sites are located throughout the province and offer varying levels of displays, interpretation and services for your enjoyment.
Saskatchewan provincial parks are home to a multitude of trails and paths, from interpretive trials that tell of the historical and environmental significance of the area to challenging biking and hiking trails, and snowmobile and cross-country ski trails in the winter.
